The Daily Hassle

Laughs on the go.

blu-gay

One of my best friends is gay, so naturally I assumed that being gay he was up to date with the latest technology. I wasn’t the smartest 23-year-old.

I just assumed that since ‘they’ are usually up to date with the latest fashion, they were pretty good at everything else.

So imagine my surprise when I bought over a blu-ray movie for us to watch and he said he didn't have a Blu-ray player. “Stunned” doesn't even being to describe my emotional state. I looked at him like I was having the first ever hominid over for a BBQ and neither of us knew how to start a fire. It just didn't compute.

So naturally I thought the next step was to go shopping for a blu-ray player. I took ‘Gay’ Pete, yes that’s what we called him with me, only to discover, when we arrived at K-Mart, he didn’t really like going shopping. I suspected straight away that something wasn't right in the land of Oz and I gave him another glazed donut look.

“You sure you’re gay?”, I asked.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

Anyway, we ended up doing lunch at subway and yes, there were many jokes by me about him eating a footlong, but it was because I loved him like a brother.

About two weeks later, we got to talking. Turned out he was pretty upset about some issues in his life. I didn’t think I was qualified to handle this kind of situation as with most confronting situations I end up making a dark joke about instead of tackling it head on. Yeah, I’ll have to get that coping mechanism looked at eventually.

Anyway, I took him to my family GP whom within that appointment time, came up with the conclusion that my friend was suffering from depression.

Turns out I was right. There was something wrong with him. I guess stereotyping everyone might be wrong, but sometimes you hit the nail on the head. Naturally, it was the lack of shopping flair that gave it away.

It took a few months. A lot of support from me and a couple of other close friends and a bucketload of counselling sessions, but he's back to his old self and we finally got him a blu-ray player.

However, when I did get a Korean movie to watch with him one night, it turns out that he didn't like subtitled movies.

The reason being that he didn't like squinting his eyes to read the text, and during the time it takes him to read it, he always misses out action on screen and hence misses out on the key points to the movie.

I decided that there was no better time than now to unfriend him. Of course, not because he’s gay.

He just doesn’t have good taste.

진지하게, 자막 한국 영화를 싫어하는 사람?
